It’ s already March and the traditional month name in Japanese is called Yayyoi (弥生). It is said that “Yayoi” means the vegetation is finally growing in a warm and cheerful atmosphere. In the lunar calendar of March, which is the time when sakura cherry blossoms bloom, there are other names for March such as Hanamizuki (花見月), Sakurazuki (桜月) and Kagetsu (花月).
At the beginning of March in Japan, there is a traditional festival called Hinamatsuri (雛祭り). Hinamatsuri is on 3rd March, also known as Peach Festival (桃の節句). It is the Doll’s day or Girl’s day to celebrate the continued health and happiness of girls and femininity in general. Japanese people will decorate the hina dolls in their home.
Hina Dolls represent the imperial family. The dolls at the top of the platforms represent the emperor and the empress. The rest of the dolls are three court ladies, five musicians and the minister of the Right and Left who used to support the government.
