THE FLAVOR OF SUMMER

22nd July was the day of major heat (大暑) of the year according to 24 solar terms. It is the time of year when the duration of the sunshine is the longest, the average temperature is the highest and the rainfall is the greatest in some areas. Cicadas are singing in a big chorus in the morning.

 

Paulownia blooms beautiful lilac flowers in spring and bears egg-shaped fruits during the hottest period in summer. Paulownia has been regarded as a sacred tree since ancient times.It is also favored by people in the past such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi and is still used as the emblem of the Government of Japan nowadays.

In such a hot summer period, we definitely need some items for refreshment. There is a summer custom in Japan which is eating eels to maintain physical health and prevent exhaustion from the summer heat. Besides eel, summer is also the best season to have some citrus fruits like yuzu, mikan, etc. By just using Yuzu, you can DIY a summer drink to help you cool off. Or you can use some yuzu-flavored condiments for cooking something good too.
